A Note From Jeff

“Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”
-Galatians 5:25

Hopefully, this last weekend brought a little clarity to a common misunderstanding about the “spiritual” life. Many people live under the misunderstanding that following Jesus is primarily about a rugged dedication to a set of “Christian” practices or attributes that grant us access to a deeper spiritual intimacy with God. Only, that kind of thinking is backwards. It is intimacy with God’s Spirit — the Holy Spirit — that enables us to have the heart transformation our hearts are longing for. Then, out of that transformation, comes the things people generally associate with prerequisites for membership in the community of the church and life with God (“…the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control”). God wants to build those kinds of things into us. They aren’t the demands of a God who withholds His Spirit that we might prove our worth to Him. No, He came to rescue broken people who require His Spirit to become whole again.

This week, consider where the Holy Spirit might be inviting you into a deeper closeness with Him. What might it look like for you to hear from Him? He intends to transform you by His power, not by the force of your own will.

In being together at the beach on Sunday afternoon: surfing, building sandcastles, throwing frisbees, and solidifying the “farmer tan” I have been cultivating all summer, I got a glimpse of God’s power at work. I had several conversations with people sensing and wrestling with the things to which the Holy Spirit was drawing their attention. I talked with people who were finding (like we all do) that obedience to the life to which God is calling us is a courageous and difficult thing. Yet, it is His Spirit which both alerts us to our need for obedience AND enables us with power to become obedient.

Last Sunday, far and away, the highlight of the service was Amanda Maguire. So many of you came to me at the door or at the beach mentioning how much her words got a hold of you. She continues to challenge me to rethink the people I include (and the people I choose to exclude) everyday. This next weekend is NEIGHBORDAY WEEKEND. Who will be included in your neighborhood? Who will be excluded? This next weekend will be such a landmark weekend for our church. Remember, the best of the church is expressed, not inside the walls of our building, but in the communities in which we live. We get to rewrite the story of what most people imagine Christians to be about: a hyper-exclusive club for the outwardly righteous. Throw a great party. Invite people. Share the story using the hashtag #mvneighborday.

See you Sunday,
Jeff

HAPPY LABOR DAY WEEKEND!

I hope that you are able to rest and enjoy family and friends. In fact, someone told me of their idea to shift the focus of Labor Day to NEIGHBOR DAY. What if you and I looked for opportunities to be a good neighbor this weekend? What if we lingered in the driveway? What if we asked a question instead of just saying “hi”? What if we took over some cookies? What if we invited someone new to the BBQ? What if…?

I love you, pray for you often, and look forward to seeing you this Sunday.

Make Labor Day, “Neighbor” Day!

What if we took this weekend, the last weekend of summer, and used it as a unique opportunity to reach out and love our neighbors? For some of us, it may mean introducing ourselves to the people on our street, in our workplace, or at school–people we see routinely, but perhaps have never engaged in conversation. What if we took the time to not only learn more about who they are, but find out more about their stories? What if we invite some neighbors into our existing plans for the weekend? Throw one last BBQ, picnic, beach or street party? For some of us, it may mean reaching out to those we were once close to, but have now drifted away. Neighbor Day gives a beautiful reason to initiate a conversation that’s long overdue, one that might allow for healing and restoration to begin. Just tell them your pastor had this crazy idea called “Neighbor Day,” where we all love and serve (maybe even meet :) our neighbors. And what if it’s not for just one weekend…but is instead a launching pad for a spirit and posture that moves with us through the entire fall season?

I believe people in our communities, in our lives, are desperate for a hope that transcends the circumstances of this world– a hope that provides a way through the confusion and emptiness this world can create. I believe they are longing for the grace and truth found in the gospel of Jesus. It’s a truth that is most profoundly on display in the people of Jesus – YOU! I believe that God has given you unique relationships for Him to be seen in and through your life. I’m praying you can see the opportunities He’s providing and that you have the courage and trust in the Holy Spirit to lean into them with the freedom and confidence that God is at work!

So, let’s make Neighbor Day real in our lives and in OC. This is a great season when people naturally recalibrate the rhythms of their life, creating the perfect opportunity to invite someone to church. I can’t wait to hear about all the stories from the parties, the conversations, the relationships being built, and ultimately the life transformation that takes place because we all decided to meet, love and serve our neighbors!

peace,

kyle

Generations Inspiring Generations

A couple of weekends ago, we painted a window into Port Mariners where our volunteers of each generation were inspiring kids through creative Bible stories, meaningful relationships, and impacting life change. Hopefully you were inspired to join us as a volunteer this fall. There are many ways to get involved, it’s easy, we will train you and we can work around your schedule.

Click here to see the many opportunities to get involved. A training meeting for all new volunteers will be this Sunday, September 1, from 12:45-2:30p. Lunch will be served and childcare is available with an RSVP.

How’s today going?

Peaches? Pain? Somewhere between?

Could you use some support with the stress and confusion of life? An advocate to help show you the way, and to help you connect with God and be who you were designed to be…?

And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever–the Spirit of Truth.  John 1416-17a

Sunday, I’m talking about the mysterious, yet knowable, Spirit of God. Some people panic when we talk about the Spirit of God, but you shouldn’t. He’s exactly who you want on your side. And He is–on your side.

Also this Sunday, I’m going tell you about our fall series starting Sept 8th and the impact it could have on your life.

Don’t forget to tell us which service you plan to attend and when you plan to serve on Sundays.
