I don’t know if “anticipation” is the right word for today. But, there certainly is a lot of build up to everything happening over the next few days. There seems to be a peculiar amount of “psyching myself up” for this extended weekend of giving thanks. Obviously, there’s the eating (I tend to find ways to justify the forthcoming feast by calling a long walk from the parking lot or the hoisting of my coffee cup “exercising”). Then, there’s all the driving and the travel. Of course, there’s the beautiful challenge of being with gathered family members.

While I can’t control what other people bring to eat at Thanksgiving, can’t control the driving habits of other people (try as I might), nor can I choose who my family is or is not, I can do something universally and sorely needed. I can listen. In the times between spurts of busyness and frenzied activity, when emails and office work take a back burner to family, we can labor to find fewer words, being more present this Thanksgiving.

Eugene Peterson writes, “listening requires unhurried leisure, even if it’s only for five minutes. Leisure is a quality of spirit, not a quantity of time. Only in that ambiance of leisure do persons know they are listened to with absolute seriousness, treated with dignity and importance. Speaking to people does not have the same personal intensity as listening to them.”

So, take whatever momentary pause there might be during these next few days and, rather than filling gaps with words and activity, listen. Listen to the people who have come to be around you: the boring ones, the ones who tell great stories, the ones who tell the same old stories poorly, the ones you love, the ones you’re supposed to love. Grant to them the most dignifying of all gifts: your undivided attention.

Happy Thanksgiving. See you on Sunday,
Jeff

Over 6,000 tags taken from trees representing gifts to change a family’s Christmas story…Over 50 tons of food given to feed the hungry in OC…Over 900 people graduating from Rooted, knowing who God is and their identity in Him more fully…Over 25 people standing to say “I Believe Jesus is Lord”…Over 100 people baptized to acknowledge their faith, trust, and new life in Jesus. We have a lot to celebrate! All of this has taken place in the past week here at Mariners Church Irvine, and I believe it’s because we’re taking our relationship with Jesus seriously, fully living out His command to Love God and love others. When we follow Him, God supernaturally energizes our love and sacrifice to transform the world and restore brokenness. I can’t wait to hear and see the stories of transformation.

My prayer is that you’re continuing to live out the mantra of thankfulness and contentment – “I want what I have, I don’t want any more.” While difficult to do anywhere, but particularly in OC, our lifestyle of thankfulness and contentment makes a profound statement about our priorities – loving and caring for those around us. Let’s walk in “enough” and continue to look for opportunities this season to be generous.

Some of you are traveling to be with family and friends this Thanksgiving – be safe and have fun! For those staying here in OC, I can’t wait to be with you guys this weekend. One of my wise, sage mentors from our church partner in Sri Lanka, Pastor Adrian, will be with us and we’ll have a couple other surprises as well. Bring some friends as we gather to remember and celebrate who God is together this weekend…

Peace…

kyle

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Wherever you are, whoever you’re with, and no matter what you’ve eaten… I hope and pray you know God’s goodness and that you have found plenty to be thankful for this week.

And this electronic intrusion into your holiday is very short. All I want to say is that I AM THANKFUL FOR YOU! I love our church. I am so glad that you are part of it. And I’m so grateful to God for all the amazing things He’s doing in our community.

…And there is MUCH more to come.

I’m very excited to share my message with you on Sunday, so fight through the food-coma and come to one of our services: 8:30, 10:00, 11:30am at the Central Library Theater.

Also, we still have space available for our Thursday New Connection Vision Night. See below to RSVP for that, the Women’s Christmas Brunch and more. Make this a significant Christmas season for you and the people you love.

Grateful,

caleb

Hopefully for you it has been a week of gratitude, and like we talked about this weekend, you’ve had the opportunity to “be the one.” We had a great time Wednesday night in the Chapel in an intimate setting sharing all that we are thankful for. It was a time of sharing and being a family together. We have a lot of exciting activities planned for the Christmas season. The Tree Lighting will be something you won’t want to miss. It will be a fun night of singing, and contests…and food…and, we are bringing in real snow! And of course we will be lighting the tree and celebrating Jesus’ birth. For Christmas Eve, we have a very special night planned. We want to help you celebrate this season in a compelling and powerful way, and part of that is experiencing Christmas with your church family as well as your community. That said, think of these events with your friends and neighbors in mind.

You may have noticed a little construction by the office building, we are putting in a baptism. It is going to become a great part of the church, a place where we can experience life-change and celebration. If you haven’t been baptized, now is the time to start thinking about it. As we go into this season, I am thankful for you. I love walking through life together; growing closer to each other and to God.

Blessings,
Jeff

Wow, what a great Sunday we had this past weekend! Your generosity was overwhelming; we handed out 195 food bags and saw 178 returned – completely full! That is almost double our goal for Thanksgiving, and of course, the turkeys keep coming in (insert joke here).

We will be giving out almost 200 dinners this Saturday as a way to help meet the needs of our community. Way to go! As part of Celebrate Different, we will continue to have opportunities this season where we get to give back and bless others. What a blessing it is to be part of a great, vibrant church that is focusing on growing closer to Jesus and each other, while making a difference in our community at the same time. As you can see below, there is a lot going on at Mariners Church Ocean Hills. So, invite a friend to and jump into this great adventure God has for us.

Blessings,
Jeff
