A Note From Christian Mungai
UNITY IN DIVERSITY
In many respects, Mariners is a global church. We have seen the dramatic impact of Rooted on our church over the last several years. Not only has it created a shift in the landscape and culture of Mariners, it has also impacted 100+ churches here in the U.S. and numerous churches in other countries. Rooted is a direct result of engaging with the global church, specifically Mavuno Church in Kenya. Our relationship with Mavuno and our other global partners has created a new foundation in our church for a more holistic picture of ministry. We have moved from being an independent church to becoming a beautiful picture of interdependence with other Kingdom-builders throughout the world. “I am because we are, and because we are, therefore I am.” In essence, we are interdependent and inter-connected by the gospel.
There is nothing more beautiful than unity in diversity. Yet, as we look around, we can see this is the very thing that is lacking in our world today. We are overwhelmed by perilous and tumultuous times. Our country is plagued by polarizing views and rhetoric, the UK and Europe struggle with many challenging issues, and the Middle East continues to be in shambles since the Arab Spring began five years ago. Africa has been challenged for decades and Latin America and some parts of Asia have their own struggles. It’s in the midst of this turmoil that the global church of Jesus Christ is called to rise up and be a much needed light in dark times. When we, (the church), put into action the mandate we have to model unity in diversity, something incredible happens. Healing. In today’s world we are not shocked by dissension, polarization, enmity, hatred, jealousy, and bigotry, among other ills. But when healing takes place in the harshest of conditions, the world pays attention.
A Note From Jeff Maguire
“This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,’ says the Lord Almighty.”
– HAGGAI 2:6-7
I’m really excited to be back this week. I have missed you all and am looking forward to reconnecting with our church family. As my family was away on some much needed vacation, stepping away from phones, technology, and familiarity, we rediscovered each other… and sunburns, too much junk food, arguing over what shapes the clouds make, repeatedly answering the question: “how much longer ‘til we get there?,” and staying up too late (all good things on a vacation). I came back this week to find one of the great joys of my time here at Mariners MV: Summer Fun Nights (VBS). In walking around and experiencing what God is doing in our community and on our church campus, I am as energized for ministry as I ever have been.
I don’t know how to express my joy and gratitude enough for what is happening this week at our church. Every night, hundreds of volunteers come to joyfully corral kids in and through the various experiences of our Summer Fun Nights kids’ program, shaping young lives one meaningful conversation, clever Bible story, humor-laden skit, colorful craft, and creative activity at a time. The response by both kids and their parents alike has been amazing. When God says, “I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land,” I’m pretty certain he was talking about the volume, the enthusiasm, and the dance-moves of our kids this week at Mariners MV.
We believe followers of Jesus come in all sizes — especially, kid-sized. It takes patient volunteer leaders to usher kids into God’s presence in a meaningful and fun way. This Sunday, we’ll cover some of the highlights from this week. There is so much that God is doing in our midst, through the dedication of great volunteers and our gifted, hard-working children’s ministry team.
Additionally, I have a few big announcements I can’t wait to let you in on. Don’t miss this Sunday as we continue in our JAMES series and cover some of things God is up to in our church community.
See you soon,
Jeff

I am so excited about the ways our church is growing and making a difference in our community—not only locally but globally as well! As many of you know, a few of us had the opportunity to travel to Nairobi, Kenya earlier this month, and it was so fun to build relationships with our global partners at Mavuno Church Downtown. Throughout our time there, the word that kept popping up for me was faithfulness. I was reminded over and over again of God’s faithfulness in my own life, in the lives of the others on our team in Kenya, and in the lives and ministries of each person we met there. God is faithful—true to His promises—even when we are weak or don’t understand our current circumstances.
We got to visit a variety of different ministries that were all started by volunteers from Mavuno Church. One empowers local artisans and helps them sell their products (jewelry, baskets, etc.); one supports cancer patients; and another teaches film-making to students in the slums. The common denominator among all of these ministries is that each of them started small. It was one person. One idea. One passion. And it was God’s faithfulness that brought each ministry into fruition. If God is using ordinary people and their simple passions halfway across the world, I believe He wants to do the same through us here in Huntington Beach!
Where do you see God’s faithfulness in your life?
How might God be prompting you to be faithful with what He has given you? (skills, resources, passions…)
We are so grateful for our partnership with Kenya, and especially for our new Kenyan friends. It has been a true blessing to our Mariners HB community to have our dear friend Betty with us for the past 6 months, as a global resident from Kenya. She will be returning to Kenya at the beginning of August, so please make sure you give her a hug on the patio when you see her, and tell her “asante sana” (thank you very much) for her time here!
Here is a note from Betty:
Friends,
I can’t believe my time here is almost up! Thank you so much for welcoming me with open arms and allowing me to be part of your church. I feel so blessed to have interacted with so many of you. From the purple chairs, on stage, on the patio, at community events, on trips to Mexico and in your homes, I will cherish the relationships and lessons that I have learned interacting with you all. Again, thank you for the great impact you as a church have had in my life.
Sincerely,
Betty Wanjiru
