I’ve been on a number of teams over the course of my life. Some of them have won championships. Many of the teams from my childhood could only look past devastating losses envisioning a box juice and a granola bar as the bright spot on an otherwise bleak Saturday morning. Whether we won or lost, the lessons we hope kids learn, sometimes in spite of the parent cheering/sideline coaching/referee-antagonizing, is about the team itself. We make friends. We commit to each other and to hard work. We learn about triumph and overcoming. We remember that no matter what, we’re in it (whatever “it” may be) together.

Sometimes a team stands out. To look back on the old pictures of the buck-toothed, freckled, alfalfa-haired boys of my childhood sports teams, there are only a few team pictures where I can name everyone. Those are the teams that meant the most, not merely because we posted successful win-loss records, but because those teams lived and played like family. In most cases, the teams characterized by the greatest successes on the field likewise engendered a life of selfless dedication to each other off it. We were friends first and teammates second. Generally, the line between the two was indistinguishable.

This past week, as our Mariners MV staff got away together for a brief retreat, I was reminded about the impact of serving on a staff team that loves like a family. We played together. We ate together. We discovered that foremost among those things to which God has called us, is a dedication to each other. I’m so grateful for the team at Mariners MV. I get to serve alongside the most talented, brightest, most enthusiastic, and most dedicated people I know. I’m honored to call them family.

As a staff team, we’re eagerly anticipating the arrival of our newest addition — our high school pastor, Jeff Bachman. This Sunday, following the 11am service (12:45pm), we’ll have a brief get-together for those who have high school aged kids, would like to serve in our high school ministry, or who are presently in high school. We’ll eat some lunch and then we’ll hear from Jeff. I’m certain it will become clear why we’re all so excited to have him join our Mariners MV family.

See you Sunday,

Jeff

PS: This Sunday, as we wrap up our JAMES series, we’ll conclude, as James’ letter to the early church instructs, to pray for healing. So, for the hurting, the weak, emotionally scarred, those who have blown it, the pained, and those who are willing to address the reality of their own struggle, we’ll ask God to meet us in the midst of it all. It won’t be a circus. There will be no gimmick. We will, however, with hope and faith, seek God’s healing power for us.

Last week was really fun as we welcomed Liz Graham, our new preschool director, up front during the service to share. Liz is a wonderful person with a great heart for kids and I’m excited to see how God uses our new preschool to minister to families in our community.

As we approach fall, we will be talking more and more about Rooted. Rooted is a ten-week small group experience that helps you grow in community, draw closer to God, and at the same time it drives the values of the church into your heart. We believe that life change happens more in circles than in rows, so please be thinking about jumping into community this fall.

It’s always great doing life with you.

Blessings,
Jeff

The Olympics are killing me. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Olympics. I love watching people compete at the highest level. I’m reminded of all of the time, energy, effort, sacrifice and years of training, resulting in minutes (or sometimes seconds) of competition, culminating in the joy of winning or the agony of defeat. That’s not what’s killing me.

What’s killing me is staying up until midnight every single night and the loss of sleep dragging into the morning. While it is a beautiful time for our family to be together watching the Olympics eating some form of sugar, I find we’ve become shorter with one another and we don’t quite have the patience we usually do. (well, maybe it’s just me:) The Olympics are tearing us apart! This is why I am so excited about our weekend series for the month of August. REFUEL. I love what Doug has taught us over the past couple of weeks – that refueling and connecting with God is not what we think AND is so much easier than we think!

I’m thrilled to be back with you this weekend for REFUEL as we talk about accessing and experiencing the love and power God intends for us. There are so many in this world who are desperate to overcome the sadness, confusion, sickness, and hopelessness of life. This weekend will be a beautiful time together as we remember the power of God is so much bigger than anything we will face in this world, and it’s available to every one of us. I know you won’t want to miss it! Also, our friend Tim Timmons will be here to lead us in worship, helping us remember and respond to who God is and all He is doing.

Be sure to invite people into this journey with you so we can refuel together. As you know, summer is a great time to connect with God and be in community. This Saturday night we’re having a zoo on our lawn after the service! Bring your family, friends and neighbors and enjoy some end-of-summer fun.

Peace…

Kyle

I have a lime tree in my backyard. I cut off a lime recently for a beverage I was drinking. It was refreshing. The moment I pulled the lime from the branch it stopped growing and ripening. Since it stopped growing, it started dying.

It’s similar for you and me. If we’re not growing, we’re slowly dying. It’s another natural law of the universe.

This Sunday and next we’ll be talking about the five catalysts for spiritual growth. I know you’ll find these messages encouraging, enlightening, and practically helpful. Join us Sunday 8:30 | 10 | 11:30a | 6p.

We’ll be celebrating the journey of our church thus far and looking to the future in a way you will not want to miss. Put it in your calendar now. I’ll give you more details soon.

See you Sunday,
