Jack: “Daddy… daddy… daddy… daddy…”

Me: “Yes, Jack.”

Jack: “Daddy… daddy…”

Me: “Yes, Jack, I’m listening.”

Jack: “Daddy… can I watch a show?”

Usually the answer is no. Sometimes he wears me down. Plus, I kinda like Thunderbirds on Amazon Prime.

There’s a story Jesus told about a widow…

He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. 3 And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’

4 “For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’” (Luke 18)

It pays to pray… and keep praying.

If annoyed, non-generous humans relent and help, how much more your loving heavenly Father? In His time, of course.

This week we continue in our series FAVOR WITH KINGS, following up on last week’s message about praying and fasting to cultivate conviction. (Listen here)

This week: “Favor, don’t leave home with it.” You don’t want to miss this.

In other news, PriceWaterhouseCoopers have drawn the winning names from our All In celebration. Here they are, in no particular order:

Swag Bag – Amador and Elena Vega
Craig Larson Pier Art Piece – Mark & Stacy Ardy
Craig Larson Wave Art Piece – Renee Sheffner
Surfing with Jairus – Viv Yee
Music Video – Huyen Nguyen
Duffy Boat Ride with Staff – Cheryn Riffenburgh
Block Party thrown by Staff – Ann & Andy Yonce

Remember, if you missed the All In night, you can still put your name on a stone and re-up your pledge this Sunday! You can also give to the operating budget or to the Step In campaign here.

Peace,

caleb

P.S.: Did you know our staff is currently office-less and mobile? We apologize for the inconvenience—we’re feeling it! Plans are in the works to move the Beach / Warner center… it’s just taking more time than expected.

I always have a level of excitement when we are about to start a new series, but I am particularly excited about this series, FAVOR WITH KINGS, where we’ll be looking at the Book of Nehemiah. Here are some things you are going to learn:

  • That our pain and sorrow can be a catalyst for breakthroughs in life
  • That what you do matters
  • That you are significant
  • There is more to who you are than you realize
  • There is greatness in you, there is something you need to do
  • Your life has significance, if only you will dare to dream

Now, doesn’t this sound like something you want to learn about and believe? As a matter of fact, I’ll bet you know people who probably need to be reminded of this as well. This is a great series to be part of.  So join us this Sunday as we kick off FAVOR WITH KINGS.

Also, we are just five days away from our kickoff of Community Nights. This is the last Sunday to sign up, so please be thinking about jumping into community. For the next five weeks we’ll have a great time being together while we take the new series (FWK) further into our lives. It’s going to be an amazing time for you and our entire church.

Always great doing life with you,
Jeff

No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.”
1 Cor. 2:9

This year we have seen our church verse come alive in so many ways and the season we are in right now is no exception. I’ve been hearing such beautiful stories of God healing deep wounds from the past, providing new opportunities, restoring relationships, and how many of you have taken courageous steps of faith toward God and one another. I love what God has been teaching us through our weekend series FAVOR WITH KINGS, reminding us of our identity in Him and how He works in us, cultivating hearts of deep conviction in order to work through us, bringing about lasting change in the world. This series is intersecting with our church verse in a remarkable way as God is truly preparing us to be amazed!

This weekend, we will continue our journey through Nehemiah and I can’t wait to share with you an unfolding story that God is writing in our church! There is a great adventure God is calling us into that I don’t want any of you to miss, an invitation to go beyond ourselves and who we are today to reach and transform Orange County for years to come. Make plans to be here – it’s a perfect weekend to invite your friends and family to come and hear the heart of Jesus expressed through our church as we love and transform the world around us.

And as always, be sure to check out everything below in the Compass for amazing opportunities for connection and transformation.

I look forward to seeing you this weekend.

Peace,

Kyle

…I was very much afraid, but…
– NEHEMIAH 2:2b-3a

Do it afraid.

As a kid (and admittedly as an adult) I was mostly fearful. It took me a long time to finally ride on a roller coaster. I didn’t try new foods often — a  resistance that I think came from my first-ever encounter with flan at a Mexican restaurant… big mistake. I was far more likely to run from a fight than get into one. I’ve never outgrown my disdain for scary movies. I still put on my seatbelt when people offer to drive me from their car to mine after an event… even if it’s in the same parking lot. I was glad when foul weather prevented me from skydiving a few years ago (that way I got credit for trying, but never had to go through with it). So, as a mostly fearful kid (and adult), I repeatedly found myself at a crossroads, either: A) avoid all things that cause me fear or B) do things while still being afraid of them. I’d have to learn to see, identify, and acknowledge fear and then do it (whatever it is) while still feeling the effects of fear.

Being afraid of something does not render it less necessary, important, or meaningful. Think about how it felt when you asked “her” to dance. Remember, when you met that coach for the first time. Consider the excitement-fear convergence of your driver’s test. Remember your first job interview. Or, think about that time someone introduced you to your now-spouse. Try to imagine all over again, how it felt to give your first oral book report in fourth grade. Fear, trepidation, sweaty palms, clumsiness, awkwardness, and stammering speech all made their appearance. But, you did it anyway.

Remember that time you thought about stepping out in pursuit of something that was personal, emotionally charged, divinely inspired, and not guaranteed to work out in the way you planned it? Some of us once knew this feeling in our past. Some of us are living with this sensation now. Still others of us have yet to experience this sensation at all… because we’ve been so afraid. This, however, is at the core of the big dreams God plants in people’s lives. More than likely, we’ll have to do that thing he’s called us to, without the luxurious absence of fear. What if we all did it afraid?

We’ll talk more about this idea Sunday, as we continue in our series: FAVOR with KINGS. These past few Sundays it’s been so great to meet the people you have invited on this journey with you. I’m so excited for each of us, in the unique ways God has called us, to take bold steps through our fears and into the future he’s invited us to.

See you Sunday,

Jeff
