A Note From Caleb

It’s Father’s Day!! I realize it’s also a big day for golf and surfing, yada, yada… But here are seven BIG reasons why joining us–your extended family–on Sunday is the right idea:

1. There’s this fancy new invention called the DVR. You can have the best of both worlds.
2. I want to affirm dads in a culture that doesn’t grasp the fullness of their significance.
3. You’ll be surprised at how far we take this father’s day thing.
4. I’m doing a memorable message geared toward DADS. (But relevant to EVERYONE.)
5. I’m sharing a glimpse of the future of our church. Seriously.
6. We’re grilling.
7. We’re handing out our Summer Calendar that is overflowing with life-enhancing opportunities.

Lastly, those of you not plugged into a current Life Group, we’re doing a Life Group Connection event Sunday June 30th. Pencil it in. Life is better when you have real friends :)

A Note From Jeff

In kicking off “The Bible” series last week, we started at the beginning of all beginnings. We started at the first page of the Bible: the creation narrative from Genesis 1. The theme of the opening paragraphs of the Bible is that God, the one who makes order from chaos, is to be worshipped in his temple (the vast expanse of the entire created universe). All things belong to God and are intended for his worship, including us. Which, if we’re honest with ourselves, creates a tension. We like being the center of the universe. We like bending the arc of creation around us. Only, what God intended, throughout the Bible, is that He is above us, above all things, the one who is to be worshipped.

In light of Father’s Day, we’ll continue in our “The Bible” series this week as we look at the Bible’s most famous and often confusing father. This weekend is all about fathers. We’re going big with a tailgate themed “dad fest”. Come hungry. Bring your dad.

Looking forward to all of what God is going to do this weekend,

Jeff

JUST A REMINDER:  this weekend is the final weekend of Saturday services at Mariners MV.

A Note From Jeff

Over the course of the last nine weeks we’ve taken an extended look at the idea of oft-problematic word “Christian.” In each part of our series, we examined the reality that Jesus is not calling us to attach ourselves to a set of principles or propositions. Rather, Jesus is inviting us to Himself, to actively live out our faith.

Last week, Doug Fields put a cap on the series by challenging us to share the story of our own journey with God. For so many of us, we’re fearful of being associated with the overeager sharers who, in Doug’s words, “accost strangers at Walmart and share the four happy hops to heaven.” But, in our own story of encountering Jesus, we put on display a powerful picture of God-at-work among us.

The story of our own encounter with God begins with His story. This week we’ll begin our next series, THE BIBLE. People of all faith backgrounds are curious about the Bible. The cable miniseries of the same name broke all kinds of viewership records for cable television. It will be a great opportunity to invite your friends who are curious about God and have often wondered about the Bible.

I look forward to seeing you this weekend,

Jeff

A Note From Jeff

The past two weeks have been amazing.  We invited you to join one of our weekend service volunteer teams and you responded.  As we have learned through the “Christian?” series we are the church, not the buildings or the services, I have been so encouraged by the number of you taking steps towards finding your place in the community here at MV.

This past weekend looked at how despite the negative behaviors of people who call themselves “Christians” we need each other. Christ’s love expressed through community is a necessary part of truly living out our faith as followers of the way. It has been so great to hear the many stories of lives changed through exploring the miss-conceptions of the word Christian.

This weekend Doug Fields will be speaking and then June 8 & 9th we will begin our summer series “The Bible”. We will dig into the Bible and explore the major stories, people and events that have shaped history.

See you this weekend,

Jeff
