A Note From Jeff

Last weekend was such a fun weekend, it was so great seeing all you dads and kids playing on the patio slam-dunking the mini basketball hoops.

This past weekend we discussed as a church family that in order for us to be the church God has called us to be, we’ll be moving to two services this summer.  These new services will be Sundays at 9 and 11am beginning June 23rd. If you have questions about what that looks like for you and your family I’d be happy to talk to you on the patio.

This weekend we’ll be wrapping up the Christian? series. This week is for anyone who has ever thought about  giving up on church. We’re excited about having Doug Fields with us for the weekend June 1st and 2nd.

Looking forward to seeing you all this weekend, invite a friend.

Men’s Group – The Explicit Gospel

“The Explicit Gospel” by Matt Chandler – Inspired by the needs of both the overchurched and the unchurched, and bolstered by the common neglect of the explicit gospel within Christianity, Matt Chandler has written this punchy treatise. He begins with the specifics of the gospel—outlining what it is and what it is not—and then switches gears to focus on the fullness of the gospel and its massive implications on both personal and cosmic levels. Come join us Wednesday nights and Thursday mornings! Questions: contact Matt Alexander.

Wednesday’s 5/15 – 6/19, 7p and Thursdays 5/16 – 6/20, 6:45a
Mission Viejo Campus, Upper room
Books available for $15

A Note From Jeff

Celebrating Mother’s day was such a blast at Mariners MV this past weekend: Hair was combed. Shirts were tucked-in. Mouths were neatly closed as people chewed salt-water taffy. “Cheese” was spoken with great enthusiasm at the photo booth. It was truly a beautiful expression of family. Take a look at our Facebook page  (Mariners Church Mission Viejo) for some of the highlights.

Amid all the laughter and the celebration of moms, we were challenged by Doug Fields’ message about choosing obedience over convenience — that the essence of true depth isn’t in knowing how to pronounce “camel” in Greek (it’s “kamelon”, for those of you wondering). Rather, a “deep” person is one who makes the daily, difficult choice to obediently follow Jesus.

This week we’ll continue in the Christian? series looking at two powerful descriptors of Jesus that have often been obscured by well-meaning Christians over the years.

See you this weekend,

Jeff

A Note From Jeff

It is the hope of every teaching pastor that people will remember the message content after any given service. While the message last weekend was about the “loopholes” we use to legitimize our secret behaviors, quietly looking for permission to indulge just a little anger, judgment, passion, etc., it was a video (a mother’s day rap) that seemed to garner a disproportionate amount of attention from our people.

Standing on the patio and in the atrium, a number of you were kind enough to remind me to continue working hard at my “day job”. Others of you (mostly grandmothers) seemed to think I have bright future in hip-hop music. For the time being, a lucrative rap career seems to be an unlikely reality.

So, I’m starting a side project… I’m forming a new band — a collaborative effort with other singer-songwriter types. We’ll be debuting our new song this weekend called “You’re the Mom for Me” from our album, Mommy. Mariners MV will be a blast this weekend: Doug Fields is teaching, the patio will be over-the-top for moms, and we’ll have free family pictures at the photo booth.

See you this weekend. Happy Mother’s Day.

A Note From Jeff

This past weekend, I made the promise at the beginning of the message that I would leave you with more questions and opportunities for discussion than answers. For so many of you, that wonderfully appeared to be the case. People were chatting about all the implications; the permissions, prohibitions, and abuses of judging and judgmentalism. Many of us have lived under the tyranny of dehumanizing judgment. Others of us have fallen into the easy trap of judging others. In one way or another, our inner tendency to find reasonable justification for the judging other people has created deep wounds.

But, wherever there are wounds, there is opportunity for healing. We have a saying around here that “we are wounded in relationships and healed in relationships”. Each week there are more and more people extending their time at Mariners MV on the patio. We are finding ways on our patio for people to experience this community, this kind of family. Kids are drawing chalk art masterpieces on the walkways. Fathers and sons are challenging each other in checkers. Toddlers are hiding donuts from their mothers. People are initiating conversations that ultimately lead to healing and hope.

Looking forward to being together this weekend,

Jeff
