We are on our way home from Study Break, one van, one family, road tripping home from Washington. It has been a great time away and I am excited to share what God has revealed to us. I am looking forward to being home and have missed being with you!

This week we have the honor of having a very special guest with us. Hank Fortener is a gifted speaker and because of his story he has a huge heart for adoption. As an added bonus, his 6p message will be different than his morning message, so take advantage of this special Sunday (8:30, 10, 11:30a & 6pm)!

I look forward to being back with you next Sunday!

GOTTA CATCH ‘EM ALL!

This phrase seems pretty applicable in every area of my life right now. Personally, my three mobile kiddos are disappearing and popping up everywhere in the house… (think “Gremlins”), and if changing a diaper while fishing belly button lint out of a mouth while giving a piggyback ride ever becomes an Olympic event, everyone else will be competing for second place.

In our Student Ministries, we had a “Pokémon Go” meetup last Friday which turned into a sea of junior highers and high schoolers trying to suppress eye rolls while teaching me how to exist in today’s world. After 15 minutes of confusion and frustration, one junior higher politely told me some random positive qualities about myself… which is when you know you’re beyond hope. I did learn a lot from these students. I learned that you can have community in anything. It doesn’t look the way it used to, but those who try to lasso youth culture and keep it in the past (or present) will become irrelevant before they have a chance to be impactful. If we believe that God’s Word is alive and active, then it has to be applicable in the shifting of youth culture.

Finally, “gotta catch ‘em all,” has been my war cry for this area. Huntington Beach is such a youth driven city and it kills to me to think how many young men and women are without hope in this area. I know it’s not possible to have EVERYONE in our student ministries, but that is still what we’re shooting for. I want every junior higher and high schooler to hear how much God loves them and to begin to walk in the incredible journey that He has for them. If you are interested in joining our Student Ministries team, we are DEFINITELY looking for energetic people who care about the next generation knowing Jesus.

I’ll be teaching in the services this Sunday and we’re going to look at an interesting view on confession. For most of us, the idea of confession is about as exciting as passing a kidney stone, but we’re going to discuss how confession is actually one of the most freeing, compelling parts of life. How is that possible?! Come find out on Sunday at 8:30, 10, 11:30a & 6p!

I am so excited about the ways our church is growing and making a difference in our community—not only locally but globally as well! As many of you know, a few of us had the opportunity to travel to Nairobi, Kenya earlier this month, and it was so fun to build relationships with our global partners at Mavuno Church Downtown. Throughout our time there, the word that kept popping up for me was faithfulness. I was reminded over and over again of God’s faithfulness in my own life, in the lives of the others on our team in Kenya, and in the lives and ministries of each person we met there. God is faithful—true to His promises—even when we are weak or don’t understand our current circumstances.

We got to visit a variety of different ministries that were all started by volunteers from Mavuno Church. One empowers local artisans and helps them sell their products (jewelry, baskets, etc.); one supports cancer patients; and another teaches film-making to students in the slums. The common denominator among all of these ministries is that each of them started small. It was one person. One idea. One passion. And it was God’s faithfulness that brought each ministry into fruition. If God is using ordinary people and their simple passions halfway across the world, I believe He wants to do the same through us here in Huntington Beach!

Where do you see God’s faithfulness in your life?

How might God be prompting you to be faithful with what He has given you? (skills, resources, passions…)

We are so grateful for our partnership with Kenya, and especially for our new Kenyan friends. It has been a true blessing to our Mariners HB community to have our dear friend Betty with us for the past 6 months, as a global resident from Kenya. She will be returning to Kenya at the beginning of August, so please make sure you give her a hug on the patio when you see her, and tell her “asante sana” (thank you very much) for her time here!

Here is a note from Betty:

Friends,
I can’t believe my time here is almost up! Thank you so much for welcoming me with open arms and allowing me to be part of your church. I feel so blessed to have interacted with so many of you. From the purple chairs, on stage, on the patio, at community events, on trips to Mexico and in your homes, I will cherish the relationships and lessons that I have learned interacting with you all. Again, thank you for the great impact you as a church have had in my life.

Sincerely,
Betty Wanjiru

Speaking of global, we have another Mexico Faith Adventure coming up! Join us on August 6 as we begin construction on a small home for a pastor’s family in Rosarito. CLICK HERE to sign up.

Also, remember to bring CASH and invite a friend to enjoy lunch at a local food truck after service for our CASH MOB this Sunday July 24 after morning services!

I am grateful for this community. May you experience God’s faithfulness and be reminded of his love this week!

Monica

FAITH FLOWS…from our heads, to our hearts, and out through our hands. That’s faith in action. What does faith in action look like for you this week?

Sunday we are continuing our conversation (inspired by James) about faith in real life. This week: WORDS.

Who do you know that needs encouragement? Who needs words of life breathed into them? Bring them to one of our services: 8:30, 10, 11:30a or 6p.

Summer is in full swing. The Angels game is this Saturday. Come and tailgate with us! Say YES to connecting with others and building relationships. Don’t miss out on our other summer events—pick up a calendar at the Welcome Center after services.

I love you and I pray that your summer is refreshing and fun…
