Have you been experiencing the fullness of grace and truth expressed in a relationship with Jesus? Has that been overflowing out of your life this week into your conversations and relationships with family, friends, your work place, or at school? What a great weekend we had remembering the gift of Jesus and celebrating moms together. I loved meeting your moms on the patio, and moms, I loved meeting your kids and families. It was such a great celebration of the gift of women in our lives and the spiritual weight they hold with truth and grace.

I know for many of you the 11a service posed some parking and traffic flow challenges. I want to let you know we’re aware of this issue and we’re working hard to make this process run more smoothly in the future. I love seeing you and meeting your family and friends every weekend, and want to encourage you to join us at our 5pm Saturday night service, or our earlier Sunday morning service at 9a. Those weekend experiences offer more room (and parking  😀 ) and also frees up space during the 11a service for new people visiting our church for the first time.

I can’t wait for this weekend as we continue our Christian? series. Kenton will be back teaching and inviting us to consider our view of God and how that impacts us as individuals and the way we relate to Him. This is such a great series for those of us who are following Jesus to remember who we are and what God is calling us to, as well as for our friends and family who have questions about what it means to be a passionate follower of Jesus.

Celebrating Mother’s day was such a blast at Mariners MV this past weekend: Hair was combed. Shirts were tucked-in. Mouths were neatly closed as people chewed salt-water taffy. “Cheese” was spoken with great enthusiasm at the photo booth. It was truly a beautiful expression of family. Take a look at our Facebook page  (Mariners Church Mission Viejo) for some of the highlights.

Amid all the laughter and the celebration of moms, we were challenged by Doug Fields’ message about choosing obedience over convenience — that the essence of true depth isn’t in knowing how to pronounce “camel” in Greek (it’s “kamelon”, for those of you wondering). Rather, a “deep” person is one who makes the daily, difficult choice to obediently follow Jesus.

This week we’ll continue in the Christian? series looking at two powerful descriptors of Jesus that have often been obscured by well-meaning Christians over the years.

This one time, at band camp…I mean at volleyball camp…I got angry. I was upset because the coach had his favorites day one. They were players he already knew from his club team. And he gave them the best opportunities and all of his attention. It wasn’t fair. In my head I thought, “These kids aren’t as good as me. I’m working harder. I have more potential.”

But my frustration cost me. I began comparing myself and then looking for approval from coaches. The distraction caused me to get discouraged and eventually I lost enthusiasm and starting playing worse. What could have been a fun opportunity to play and grow became an experience that I hated.

I thought of that volleyball camp this morning while I was preparing the message for Sunday. Sunday I’m going to tell you why so many Christians are angry. You don’t want to miss this weekend.

Sunday is Mother’s Day! Make your plans now to have your mother, wife, or significant female in your life at one of our two services (9am and 11am). This is going to be a SPECIAL DAY in honor of the women we love.

In related news, I heard about this new Reality Show: “Moms.” In it, 8 married men are dropped off on an island…each man has 1 car and 4 children…each child plays two sports and takes music/dance lessons…the man must…

  • care for the 4 children
  • keep his assigned house cleaned
  • do the dishes
  • correct all the homework
  • complete the science projects
  • cook
  • do laundry
  • shave his legs
  • apply make-up daily while driving children to school
  • help in classes weekly
  • clean up after sick children (in the middle of the night)

Men have access to one shared television only after:

  • all the kids are put to bed
  • all the chores are done
  • and they don’t get the remote control

Weekly, the children vote men off the island based on their incompetence. The last man wins–only if he has enough energy to be intimate with his spouse on a moment’s notice. And when the last man wins, he can play the game over and over again for the next 18 years… eventually earning the right to be called MOM.
