As this small church grew
in size, so did its meeting
places. The group began to
meet at Mariners Elementary School, where the church
found its name: “Are you going to Mariners this Sunday?” And from there, they moved to Corona del Mar High School. The first full-time pastor,
Roy Thompson from Texas, was hired
In 1967, and by 1969 Mariners Church was meeting in a small office building on Pacific Coast Highway near MacArthur in Corona del Mar.
The late 1960’s introduced us to the miniskirt,
Star Trek and Sesame Street. Martin Luther King
Jr. was assassinated, Neil Armstrong walked on the
moon and Yasser Arafat became the leader of the PLO.
The counter-cultural movement brought conversations about faith that were less about heritage and tradition and more about meaning and purpose. The leadership of Mariners desired God to be on display not just in words, but
in real, tangible ways. Mariners was becoming a community
of people who were honest about their lives and struggles and sought a redemptive relationship with Jesus, believing He has the power to transform.
