The new millennium brought excitement and hope for the future. The land behind Mariners came up for sale. It was slated for new homes, but the Irvine Company gave Mariners the first right-of- refusal for its purchase. The Irvine Company was asking $20 million dollars.
It was now or never. If we didn’t act now, the land would likely never be used for the work of God. Mariners finally had the opportunity to buy enough
land to expand and build much needed structures for
ministry. But $20 million was a lot of money. Kenton
and the Elders communicated the vision and the need to the congregation and prayed God would bless this new opportunity. The capital campaign, Imagine, was inspired by the thought of how His Kingdom could grow through this project and our resources be used to develop disciples of Jesus.
God’s Spirit worked in the hearts of Mariners’ people
and prompted one fifth of the congregation to commit
to the Imagine campaign and begin a transformational
journey of faith. This was huge! These people asked
God, “What will you have me do? What is my part in
your Kingdom and in this church?” They they listened and responded with sacrificial generosity.
As God led, they pledged and gave the exact amount needed to purchase the 18 acres. Through His help and guidance, Mariners’ future was secure. The very land that Benedictine monks
decreed for “spiritual use” back in 1950 would hold a church poised to bring people into closer relationship with Jesus and be His light in the community.
Through five decades, God wove the details together beautifully.
