P. 9

In 1963, a small group of Christians—friends, mostly neighbors, and many from different churches—got together to pray, study God’s Word and share their passion for reaching their Newport Harbor community with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Quickly, more families became involved in this “Think and Pray” group and Bible studies popped up in homes throughout the neighborhood.
As God led, they began to pray about starting a new church where
their friends would be welcomed and community mattered. This group wanted to create a place less “churchy” and more comfortable for those who were put off by “religion” and didn’t have a relationship with God. They wanted a place where people belonged.
The following year, 1964, this same group of believers initiated the first Newport Beach Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast and Christian Leadership Week. These events have grown to become Orange Coast Christian Outreach Week, where men and women of influence share their stories of personal encounters with God.
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority
in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
