In 1950,
before there was an Irvine,
before any homes, buildings and schools were built, before Fashion Island
and South Coast Plaza
and the 405 freeway,
when buffalo, cattle and sheep grazed the fields,
a Benedictine order of monks came from the east coast looking for land to build a “spiritual place.”
Farmer and rancher James Irvine sold them 25 acres. Decades later, this property plus an additional 21 acres, is where Mariners Church stands today.
